THE GEORGIAN THEATRE - Experience

Press Release
Date of Issue: 26 June 2017

Historic theatre is in the running for tourism Oscars

The Georgian Theatre Experience in Richmond, North Yorkshire, has been shortlisted as a finalist in the prestigious 2017 White Rose Awards – the largest celebration of tourism excellence in the UK.

Organised by Welcome to Yorkshire, the awards recognise and reward the very best in the industry throughout the county across 17 specialist categories. The Theatre is a finalist in the Small Attraction of the Year category for its popular guided heritage tours and recently opened museum.

“We are absolutely delighted to be one of the finalists in this year’s White Rose Awards and to be joining the cream of Yorkshire’s top tourist attractions in the concluding round of the competition,” said Clare Allen, Chief Executive of The Georgian Theatre Royal. “Since its launch almost a year ago, visitor numbers to The Georgian Theatre Experience have shot up and the positive feedback we have had has been amazing,” she added.

During a visit to The Georgian Theatre Experience, people are given a ‘back-stage’ guided tour of the UK’s oldest working theatre in its original form where they can look around the distinctive three-tiered auditorium, discover hidden trap doors, peek inside stars’ dressing rooms, as well as tread the boards of the historic stage itself.

There is also an opportunity to spend time in the new exhibition area and find out more about the lives of Georgian actors and their 18th century audiences through interactive displays, digital presentations and a wide range of exhibits.
The tours are all conducted by a team of dedicated volunteers whose individual insight into the Theatre’s fascinating history makes each visitor experience unique.
Volunteer Guy Wilman helps train the guides and is part of the team that ensures that everyone who visits the Theatre enjoys a top-class experience and friendly welcome. “We are all very proud to be a White Rose Award finalist and it means such a lot to all the volunteers who work at the Theatre to have their contribution recognised in this way. The Theatre is a very special place and we love showing it off to visitors. It is a privilege to meet so many people and we strive to make each visit as enjoyable and memorable as possible,” he said.
The winners and runners-up for the White Rose Awards will be announced at an award ceremony later this year. The five other finalists in the Small Attraction of the Year category, include: Burton Constable Hall and Grounds (Skirlaugh); Kilnsey Park (Skipton); National Emergency Services Museum (Sheffield); Scampston Hall and Walled Garden (Malton); and Stillingfleet Lodge Gardens (York).
Sir Gary Verity, Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said: “The quality of this year’s entries has been exceptional and makes me feel hugely proud of all the brilliant work going on in tourism in the county. It’s an honour to be part of these awards that recognise the many businesses and organisations that make Yorkshire such an amazing destination.
I extend my thanks to everyone who took the time to enter and huge congratulations to those who have made the shortlist.”

The Georgian Theatre Experience is open Monday to Saturday from mid-February to mid-November, with tours starting on the hour from 10am to 4pm. For further information, please call 01748 823710.
